Limited agricultural integration into value chains in Mozambique

In Mozambique, agricultural value chains face limited integration, impacting productivity and farmer livelihoods. Several factors contribute to this, including weak infrastructure, limited access to markets and inputs, and insufficient investment in agricultural research and extension services . While initiatives like SUSTENTA and Feed the Future aim to address these challenges, significant gaps remain in connecting farmers to profitable markets and improving their access to essential resources.   Here's a more detailed look at the issues: 1. Weak Infrastructure:   Poor Roads and Transportation:   Inadequate road networks and transportation infrastructure hinder the efficient movement of agricultural products from farms to markets, increasing costs and reducing the competitiveness of Mozambican agricultural goods.   Limited Storage Facilities: The lack of proper storage facilities leads to post-harvest losses, particularly for perish...

Addressing the root causes of food insecurity

Addressing the root causes of food insecurity requires tackling poverty, conflict, and climate change, while also promoting sustainable agriculture, improving infrastructure, and reducing food waste . Furthermore, enhancing social safety nets and promoting economic development are crucial.     Here's a more detailed look:   1. Poverty and Inequality:     Poverty:   Many people lack the financial resources to afford adequate food, making poverty a major driver of food insecurity.     Inequality: Disparities in income and access to resources exacerbate food insecurity, particularly for marginalized communities.   Economic Development:   Creating jobs, providing access to education and healthcare, and promoting economic opportunities are essential for lifting people out of poverty and improving their food security.   2. Conflict and Instability:     Conflict:   War and displacement di...

Food Security in Mozambique

Mozambique faces significant food insecurity, with nearly 5 million people requiring urgent support . This is due to a combination of factors including climate shocks like droughts and cyclones, conflict, and the depletion of food reserves. The El Niño phenomenon has severely impacted the 2023/24 agricultural season, affecting over 100 districts.   Here's a more detailed breakdown: Key Factors Contributing to Food Insecurity:     Climate Shocks:   Mozambique is highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, including droughts, floods, and cyclones. These events can severely impact agricultural production and food availability.     El Niño :   The recent El Niño event has caused a drier-than-normal rainy season, leading to reduced harvests and increased food insecurity.   Conflict:   Ongoing conflict in the northern part of the country, particularly in Cabo Delgado, has displaced populations and disrupted livelihoods....

Rapid Cassava Stem-seed Multiplication Method

The rapid cassava stem-seed multiplication method focuses on efficiently increasing the quantity of planting material . This involves using short stem cuttings, often with two buds, and promoting rapid rooting, either in beds under plastic or in specialized units. The process includes preparing mini-stem cuttings (whole stems cut into smaller pieces), stripping leaves from tip shoots, and placing them in water or a suitable rooting medium. The goal is to achieve a high multiplication ratio, enabling faster evaluation, distribution, and large-scale planting of new cassava varieties.   Here's a more detailed breakdown: 1. Preparation of Mini-Stem Cuttings: Stem Selection: Use both hard, semi-hard, and tip shoots from cassava stems. Cutting: Whole stems are cut into smaller pieces, with the number of nodes per cutting depending on the stem's maturity, internode length, and weather conditions. Tip Shoot Handling: Strip leaves...

Agriculture redundacy in Mozambique

In Mozambique, agriculture plays a vital role, employing a large portion of the population and contributing significantly to the national economy. However, the sector faces challenges like low productivity, limited access to markets, and vulnerability to climate change. Addressing these issues requires a multi-faceted approach including policy changes, infrastructure development, and support for smallholder farmers.     Here's a more detailed look at the situation:     1. Importance of Agriculture:     Agriculture is the primary source of income for most rural households and a major employer.     It accounts for a substantial portion of the country's GDP and exports.     It's crucial for food security and poverty reduction.     2. Challenges Facing Agriculture:     Low Productivity:   Traditional farming methods, limited access to improved seeds, and lack of irrigation contribute to low yields. ...
